When should I do orthodontic braces?

Orthodontic braces may be done at any age and for a variety of reasons.

For children, your pedodontist may recommend your child for an orthodontic evaluation as early as 7 years old and above. An orthodontist is specially trained to diagnoses bite occlussion and align teeth. The most common age when braces are opted is after all your child’s permanent teeth have grown in – usually between the ages of 8 and 14. When exactly to get dental braces done will depends on your child’s condition misalignment and severity.  Orthodontic braces for during the phase when you child is still growing normally enables faster and good treatment results.

For adults, there is no age limit where you cannot have orthodontic braces done if you still have healthy teeth, bones and gums.

Braces is typically done as a functionally need to resolve orthodontic problems, but many individuals opt for orthodontic braces for a perfectly straight smile. Braces choosen over other cosmetic dentistry treatment such as veneer or crowns because your natural teeth is kept.

Issues orthodontic braces treat include:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth
  • An overbite
  • An underbite
  • A crossbite
  • An incorrectly positioned jaw

Whether you are looking to correct a structural issue or you are considering getting braces purely for cosmetic purposes, they can not only correct the positioning of your teeth, but also improve your overall oral health.

Why

Why should I opt for orthodontic braces?

Orthodontic treatment can benefit you other than provide for better aesthetics for a nice smile. When teeth are aligned:

  • Teeth are easier to clean and therefore reduces the risk of plaque build-up, periodontal gum diseases and teeth decay. In turn, bad breath is reduced.
  • A good bite reduced the risk of teeth wear
  • You can chew better and eliminate or reduce stress or pain of jaw joints for some individuals.

How

How does orthodontic braces treatment procedure work?

#1 – step 1 Assessment and evaluation

When you call our bangkok cosmetic dental center, we can provide you with a draft quote on the various type of braces. You will however need to consult with the orthodontist to check on your case complexity and confirm your treatment plan before you are able to determine the final braces costs.

During you first consult, large panoramic and celphometric x-rays will be required. If you have this previously taken within the last 6 months, please do bring them along during your consult. Your orthodontist uses the x-rays to draw up your unique treatment recommendation. Regardless on the type of orthdontic braces opoting, your orthodontist will normally take an impression of your teeth for study model or to start your braces labwork. If you choose invisalign clear aligners, a digital scan of your mouth is taken.

#2 – step 2 preliminary treatment and set up

Before you actually start orthodontic braces, your dentist may request you to have your teeth professionally cleaned and for any preliminary treatments to take care of other oral care conditions (e.g. periodontal problems or tooth extraction) before your braces are installed.

#3 – step 3 installation of braces

For fixed braces, on the day of braces installation your orthodontist dries your teeth surface and applies an etchant. The brackets are placed on with bonding adhesive and cured with a light to set the bond. Finally, archwire are placed on. Ligature bands on metal braces and clear braces holds the archwire in place. Self-ligating braces has special brackets that clips the archwire within the need for ligature bands. The appointment visit for bracket installment may last for about 30 mintues to an hour.

It is normal to feel minor discomfort for a first few days that is temporary. Talk to your orthodontist to relieve discomfort if it is affecting you.

#4 – step 4 followup visits

Once your braces are on, you orthodontist will arrange for adjustment or checkup visits ranging between 4 to 8 weeks. During these visits, the ligature bands on metal braces and clear braces are replaced with new ones. You can request your dentist to change the color of your bands. For self-ligating braces, archwires are repalced and adjusted. Your monthly appointment visit is usually short taking around 15 ot 30 minutes.

#5 – step 5 Retainers

When your orthodontic braces treatment is complete, for fixed braces your orthodontist removes the brackets and polish your teeth. Panoramic and celephlometric x-rays are taken to check their new positions and a retainer is made to hold your teeth in their new positions.
